The first questions you need to ask about budgeting are:
Do I really need to budget?
How can budgeting help me?
I’ve thought that pretty much no matter what you earn that having and carrying out some kind of budget is a good thing. The reason I think this is that from having a budget your can accurately work out many things in the future – more about this in part 2 which talks about the mortgage planning approach I now take with clients looking for home and investment loans.
I’ve said for quite a while that with budgeting the difficulty is not coming up with the budget it’s having a workable system to implement it. What this means is that it is easy to agree on paper to spend a certain amount per week or month, but what do you actually do when you’re at the shops? There are lots of ways to implement a budget – one way could be to withdraw cash at the ATM each week to live on – but make sure you buy the groceries first otherwise you could end up being hungry! To help with budgeting I’ve put together a completely free 5 Part Finance series available by subscribing in the left column of this site. I’d love to help as many people as possible with this which is why I created the finance series – you or anyone you know who needs this kind of help can jump on and get some invaluable information. Parts 1 & 2 are about budgeting, part 3 is about doing some research on buying property, part 4 is looking at the big picture of where your life is heading and part 5 is a bit about my service.
So sign up now and see how valuable it is to increase your financial education.
My next article in this series will be on mortgage planning and how my service is now very different to either the average mortgage broker or the person you’ll see at the bank. Click here to read the next installment.
